Sodexo Calls for Reduction in Food Waste for Earth Day

College students from coast to coast will weigh their waste on Earth Day

Gaithersburg, Md. (Vocus) April 20, 2009

Next time you’re cleaning out your fridge, consider this: Americans throw away more than 25 percent of the food they prepare, impacting the economy and the environment. Food waste is the single-largest component of the waste stream – each year, 96 billion pounds of food are tossed out. The US spends about billion a year to dispose of food waste.

Sodexo is raising awareness of this huge problem, with events on campuses from coast to coast this Earth Day, April 22. At several campuses, students will weigh the food they discard after each meal. These Weigh the Waste initiatives could reduce food waste on a campus by as much as 30 percent simply by making the students more aware of what they serve themselves verses what they actually eat.

Sodexo, a leading foodservice provider to 600 campuses in the United States and Canada, sees a vast opportunity to reduce the environmental impact caused by food waste and to call attention to the fact that one person’s waste could be another person’s treasure.

“Right now, more than 35 million Americans are going hungry every day – this makes it fifty-fifty more important to be careful about what we eat – not only for the environment and the economy, but to show respect for food and nutrition,” said Tom Post, president of Sodexo Campus Services.

On Earth Day 2008, 300 Sodexo-serving campuses stopped using trays in cafeterias to reduce food, water, energy and chemical blow. Sodexo studies show that when students stop using trays, food waste is reduced by 30 percent or more.

Campuses participating in Weigh the Waste this Earth Day include: Drexel University in Philadelphia, Fordham University in New York, Gonzaga University in Spokane, University of Denver, Howard University in DC, and Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia and Hobart and William Smith in Geneva, N.Y.

These programs are part of Sodexo’s ongoing commitment to reduce blown, conserve irrigated, provide locally grown and sourced foods and materials and to engage in green cleaning practices in all food service and facilities management client sites globally.

Grammy® Award Winning Harmonica Virtuoso Howard Levy Launches the First Online Personal Video Exchange, the Howard Levy Harmonica School

Howard Levy

Napa, CA (PRWEB) December 4, 2009

Grammy® Award winner Howard Levy, in conjunction with ArtistWorks Inc. (AWI), is excited to launch The Howard Levy Harmonica School (HLHS) – the first ever online personal video exchange school that will teach students around the world to play harmonica, including the various genres of jazz, blues, folk, classical and world music.

Partnered with online video technology experts AWI, Levy integrates years of experience as a player and educator with their innovative video exchange teaching technology. Students around the world can now study one on one with harmonica virtuoso Howard Levy. Up until now, video education has been a very one-dimensional learning experience. With AWI’s groundbreaking personal video technology, learning has now become a multi-dimensional experience that is more efficient, collaborative and fun. AWI’s personal video exchange technology is revolutionizing the musical learning experience.

Howard Levy is the world’s most advanced diatonic harmonica player and out of him flows radiant music. His entire life has been musical – since his early compositions and improvisations at age nine. He doesn’t play just harp, he plays instruments from all the families and applies his masterful technique to each. His harmonica style is influenced by multiple cultures, as well as playing other musical instruments. Levy is widely known as a founding member of the Flecktones and has also performed and recorded with Kenny Loggins, Dolly Parton, Bobby McFerrin, Paul Simon, John Prine, and many others.

HLHS offers the most extensive, educational harmonica program available online. Levy’s comprehensive interactive video curriculum is a self-paced program categorized by skill level (beginner harmonica to advanced), as well as by styles (jazz, blues, world music, classical and folk). Student members to the HLHS watch and study the harmonica video lessons at their appropriate skill level or style preference. Using a basic webcam, students record themselves practicing and submit their video online using the site’s video exchange system. Once the student’s video is uploaded, Levy reviews every video and responds directly to students with a personalized critique, either by video or written evaluation. The exchange between master harmonica teacher and student is subsequently published on the site for all students in the community to learn from.

The Howard Levy Harmonica School is built on the proprietary technology platform and video exchange system of ArtistWorks, Inc. Originally implemented at the Jimmy Bruno Guitar Institute, the AWI format allows virtuoso musicians to teach the world by presenting their full method or curriculum on video to subscribers of their sites. The artist offers instruction and guidance through personalized video exchange lessons online. The students and the artists use simple webcams to manage the video flow using the Video Management System created by ArtistWorks. This inventive use of video exchange for the instruction of musical instruments has been implemented at Qbert Skratch University, the Andreas Oberg Guitar Universe, Peery Piano Online, Tony Trischka School of Banjo and now, the Howard Levy Harmonica School. All online lessons are available for a .00 subscription fee for a three-month period.

What Does Brown v. Board Mean to Washington, D.C. Students?

WASHINGTON, DC (PRWEB) April 21, 2004

The US Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education decision brought brushed societal change 50 years ago that led to the desegregation of the D.C.Â’s public schools. This year, students in D.C. have done in-depth research on the impact of this decision locally and nationally. On April 24, 2004 at Douglas Hall on the Howard University campus, students from D.C. schools will present their findings on Brown v. Board and other historical moments tied to the theme of “Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History.” These presentations are part of National History Day in Washington, D.C.

National History Day in Washington, D.C. is part of the National History Day organization, a nonprofit year-long education program that encourages young people to explore a historical subject related to an annual theme. Participating students choose their own topics of study and present museum-type exhibits, multimedia documentaries, original performances, or traditional research papers that are judged by historians and educators. The D.C. competition will involve students in grade 6- 12, with separate categories for Junior Division (grades 6-8) and Senior Division (grades 9-12).

A diverse range of entries will mark this yearÂ’s event, including a documentary on the Whitelaw Hotel, a hotel at the center of 20th century Black D.C. Society; an exhibit that presents original research on the Cuban Missile Crises gained from an exclusive questioned with Robert MacNamara; and a powerful performance on the impact of Brown v. Board in Washington, D.C.

This educational program is unfastened to the public and is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the rich history of Washington, D.C. and the world. Student projects will be evaluated by historians, educators and qualified judges from the D.C. metro area.

First- and second-place winners at the state competition will advance to the National History Day contest, set for June 13-17 at the University of Maryland at College Park.

National History Day is the nationÂ’s leading educational program for history education in the schools. The program annually engages two million people in 48 states, the District of Columbia and American Samoa. National History Day also provides educational services to students and teachers, including a summer internship program, curricular materials and Internet resources, and annual teacher workshops and training institutes.
